Research Interest

Auditory processing describes mechanisms by which animals process sensory auditory input to produce behavioural relevant output. On a neuronal level, input and output are linked by specific neuronal processing circuits. I am interested how these neuronal circuits are adapted to the specific needs of the system.

I studied this in vivo in the most precise auditory system of mammals, the brainstem of Mongolian gerbils. There, I determined the timing of inputs of action potentials in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) by measuring conduction velocity in globular bushy cell (GBC) fibers and synaptic delays at the Calyx of Held synapse. To this end, I performed in vivo extracellular recordings of MNTB neurons in combination with electrical stimulation of GBC fibers. Furthermore, I investigated the role of precisely timed inhibition for ITD detection in the medial superior olive (MSO) by recording extracellular responses of MSO neurons to auditory stimulation while pharmacologically manipulating the inputs to the MSO.   

I recently started to work on neuronal processing circuits in bushcrickets. In this rather simple prothoracic network, neuronal integration of auditory information from the ears in the legs is processed.
